For the Spring 2024 semester, ICC&CS rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church beginning on January 31. The concert will be on Saturday, May 4 featuring the Kodály “Te Deum” and the Brahms “Schicksalslied” (Song of Fate). The chorus will be accompanied by the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra.
Schicksalslied (Song of Fate) is considered to be one of Brahms’s best choral works along with Ein deutsches Requiem. In fact, Josef Sittard argues in his book on Brahms, “Had Brahms never written anything but this one work, it would alone have sufficed to rank him with the best masters.” The magnificent Te Deum (1936) by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly is a festive work celebrating the 250th anniversary of the recapture of Buda castle from the Turks. Kodaly was the foremost collector of Hungarian folk music, and the work uses stylistic elements from it throughout.
